Our Junior Sector Grade 5 to Grade 7 students, participated in a series of Human Library events featuring experts from the art world, aligned with this year's Community Engagement Programme theme. This immersive experience formed a key component of our project-based learning approach, spearheaded by Pedagogical and Curriculum Consultant Heathcliff Schembri.
Grade 5 students explored how art helps us "paint a better picture" through diverse creative lenses. Our very own Chiara Hyzler (Director, performer, and producer )shared her multifaceted creative journey, while our professional musician, Matthew Vella, connected music to visual art through Kandinsky's paintings, demonstrating how emotions translate into sound. Fashion designer Luke Azzopardi showcased his work and the challenges behind fashion design, and Marica Lewis from Bristow Potteries and Keith Caruana from Captain's Cut introduced students to pottery processes and the artistry of clothing design. Next week, visual artist Paul Caruana will share his expertise.
Grade 7 welcomed author and illustrator Trevor Zahra, who discussed how his illustration techniques have evolved with technology. Founding San Anton parent and illustrator Marisa Attard explained her collaborative process with writers and character development. Luke Azzopardi returned to discuss textiles, accessories, and fashion as art, while artist Anton Calleja presented his works. Museum curator Maria Pia Aquilina explained artifact curation, photographer Therese Debono explored photography as art, and Chiara Hyzler returned to the classroom to discuss performing arts.
Grade 6 students discovered art through varied mediums and perspectives. Matthew Vella and Michelle Abela explored music as a form of artistic expression, while Olivia Cini introduced the craft of glassblowing. Marica Lewis from Bristow Potteries demonstrated working with clay and flowers, and Martha Gauci brought art to life through drama. Louis Cauchi Savona shared his expertise in gemology, revealing the artistry behind precious stones.
Through these encounters with working artists and creative professionals, our students learn that art extends far beyond the canvas. They've discovered how creativity shapes our world, from the clothes we wear to the objects we use daily, and how artistic expression takes countless forms. By exposing students to this rich tapestry of artistic disciplines, we are cultivating their appreciation for beauty, innovation, and human expression while inspiring them to see the world through a more creative and thoughtful lens.
