Dr. Michael Buttigieg, a parent of one of the students in this class, was invited to a Science lesson to give a talk about the skeleton of the human body as part of their Science topic Moving and Growing. </p> <p>Accompanying Dr Buttigieg was a large model of a skeleton which he used to point out and explain the many different bones. Dr. Buttigieg started off by saying that the human skeleton consists of 206 bones. These bones support and allow us to move. Broccoli and milk help to grow healthy bones. The longest bone in our body, he explained, is found in the leg, while the tiniest bone is found inside the ear. Each hand, he explained, has 26 bones in it. Our nose and ears are not made of bone; they are made of cartilage, a flexible substance that is not as hard as bone. Dr Buttigieg, then, spoke about the joints. Bones are connected to other bones at joints.</p> <p>The skeleton, the doctor said, protects our insides. He asked the children why we have a skull, to which a student promptly replied,  To protect the brain and that it is made up of 22 bones. Another student told the class that the ribs protect the heart and the lungs and that the backbone protects the spinal cord. </p> <p>At the end of the talk, Dr Buttigieg gave the children the opportunity to ask questions.
