On Friday 9th January 2009 San Anton School`s Junior Sector celebrated an old school tradition by organizing Pets Day on the feast of St. Anthony the Abbot.
As the School opened its doors in the morning, the excited students and parents streamed in excitedly with their pets, whilst the School Amphitheatre was transformed into a menagerie of dogs, cats, tortoises, turtles, birds, goldfish, rabbits, hamsters, cats and dogs.
Dun Gorg Dalli, the Schools Spiritual Director told the story of St. Anthony the Abbot, patron saint of the Animal Kingdom and led the children in prayer to bless their animals, while guest speaker - Karm Serracino Inglott spoke to the children on general pet care and answered the eager childrens` numerous questions on the subject.
The children, (in some cases assisted by their parents) proudly paraded their pets, and this memorable event was brought to an end with Ms. Rosanne Demanuele, Assistant Head of the Junior Sector , distributing the traditional “Hobza ta` Sant Antnin” to each child, symbolic of the Raven that brought bread to St. Anthony whilst he was living in solitude.
Pets day in fact was the start of animal awareness week taking place between the 12th and 16th January 2009. Planned activities include visits to animal shelters, and a visit to school by the Malta Police Force – Dogs Section to demonstrate to students how animals can assist human beings in their work.
Various fundraising activities such as bake sales, soft toy stalls are also being organized to raise money to buy pet food for the various animal charities across the island.
