As part of the School`s Healthy Eating Policy which comes into effect today 3rd March 2008, all Junior Sector Children began their School Day by having a light healthy breakfast as part of the School`s Breakfast Club Initiative. As the children went back to their classroom after morning assembly, excitement ran high as they all opened their breakfast box to discover what had been packed for their school breakfast.
From class to class all the students munched on their crunchy healthy cereal, and yogurt. Many opted for healthy colourful fruit such as strawberries, grapes, apples and bananas and proudly showed off their healthy choices to their class teacher, Ms Rosanne and Ms Agnes - the School Nurse and Health Officer. After this fifteen minute vitamin boost, all the children were ready to start their lessons and class activities. What better way to start the school day?
Breakfast is the first brain fuel and is an important meal for a child after sleeping all night, so that they don't get that dip in energy half way through the morning that may make them bad tempered and irritable.
It is also a proven fact that Breakfast reduces declines in attention and memory over the morning in School Children ( Wesner 2003)
Breakfast clubs provide an excellent opportunity to ensure that school pupils begin the day with a healthy breakfast, which forms part of a well-balanced diet.
It is such an important part of the day for children and adults alike and it is therfore important that children receive this positive message at an early age.
