All San Anton students from Pre-grade right up to Grade Twelve, recently participated in a dress-down day to raise funds for Haiti by paying a fine of two Euros for not coming to School in their uniform.
The sum of EUR 1743 was presented this morning to Ms Claudia Taylor East from SOS Malta by a selection of students representing the whole school. Whilst thanking the students for their generosity, Ms Taylor East informed them that the money donated will be sent to the Sisters of Mother Teresa in Haiti to help rebuild their orphanages which collapsed during the earth quake which took place in January.
The idea for this fund-raising initiative was actually conceived by Meg Gardner a Grade 11 student who put forward the idea to her PSD teacher.
“ I was watching the news and was moved by the devastation caused by the Haiti earthquake. I also wanted to ensure that Malta would be amongst those countries helping out, and thought that I could contribute to this by organising a fund raising initiative at my own school. In this way I would also be raising awareness of people and children who are unfortunately going through very difficult times.” commented Ms. Gardner.
“It is very important for us to see our students cultivate the values of cooperation and community, an awareness of other’s needs, and ultimately a sense of altruism and solidarity, particularly because we live in a world which tends to encourage materialism, individualism and competition so forcefully,” concluded Ms. Vicki Anastasi, Head of School.
The generous amount raised by the students is demonstrative of their enthusiasm and support for this initiative.
