This morning all Junior Sector students were treated to a cup of freshly squeezed orange juice. This initiative forms part of a scheme co-funded by the EU and the local government which will see all primary school children across the island receiving a portion of fresh local fruit or vegetables on a weekly basis.
As the juice arrived in recyclable containers, in a refrigerated van, Ms Agnes, the School Nurse and Health Officer checked the supplies, and set about distributing the juice to all the classes with the help of Ms. Rosanne, the Assistant Head for the Junior Sector. The children excitedly drank the orange juice whilst pointing out its benefits, which they had learnt about in class, and are looking forward to next week`s portion of vegetables.
“ We are very excited about this initiative as it ties in nicely with the School`s food policy . Our belief is that a balanced healthy, nutritious diet is important for the development of a child’s physical state, as well as for their intellectual abilities. Feeding the body with the proper nutrients helps fuel the mind to be more receptive to learning new skills. We hope that this initiative will continue to encourage healthy habits,” concluded Ms. Agnes.
