A visit by an Aztec Chief

11th November 2010

After an exhilarating San Martin walk where the weather was just glorious, the students of Grade 6 and Grade 7 together with their teachers were treated to a most interesting an unusual experience.

A Mayan and an Aztec chief from Guatemala and Mexico were invited to school to give the children a talk about their culture. The students sat in a huge circle and listened away.

They explained how children are given a name with a meaning depending on the time of day and the weather on the day they are born. The children also listened attentively to stories about eagles and condors.

All this while the Aztec Chief went round showing the children a long wind instrument decorated with eagle feathers and talons.

The men each wore a headdress made from colourful parrot feathers and played a drum made out of a hollow tree trunk. They sang songs while the children clapped to the rhythm and also danced to the music.

What an enjoyable experience!

A big ‘thank you’ goes to Ms Camille Cassar for making this visit possible.
